The Pop 20: Most Popular 1.1.1 Xbox Minecraft Seeds

A few of you have been asking me to which seeds I was referring when I said that I won't be reviewing any of the Pop 20s because they had already been reviewed ad nauseam on other Web sites. This is the list of twenty seed names that are the most popular for one of two reasons: either they are really spectacular or they are sucky but hyped to death because it's so easy to find chests full of saddles.

I'll let you decide which is which.

Without further ado, I present -- in order -- the carefully constructed list of the top twenty most revered Xbox Minecraft 1.1.1 seed names:

  1. gargamel

My Review

Well, while this was the lowest scoring seed of the day, it did have two things going for it. First, there were a plethora of trees all around the board -- so much so that at certain times it was difficult to move around (especially in the thick forests of the southwest corner). Second is the flatland -- which is of interest to people looking to build villages quickly without having to move too much block. I spawned on a tiny desert island in the middle of nowhere, but easily found a nice home when I swam back to the mainland. This level shouldn't be too hard for beginners.

Items of Interest

  • [-167.65.-146] sugar
  • [-136.70.55] two small floaters
  • [-239.72.392] grassland
  • [-184.70.394] lava pit

Images

It's a lava pit.

My Review

So, today was all about volcano levels and I wanted to see if using the word "volcano" would produce the desired results. No dice. This board is very sparse and the spawn point was very barren. Turned out to be the lowest scoring of the day. Wood is difficult to find and there were very few landmarks. I have to admit, though, I logged two medium-sized floaters. So for people who like to make their home in the sky, you might want to check this one out.

Items of Interest

  • [-14.68.84] gravel
  • [-46.78.137] medium floater
  • [-63.69.185] medium floater with coal
  • [-141.65.251] large sugar, medium cave with another hidden cave inside (bring a pickaxe)
  • [-145.65.291] small hidi-hole
  • [-255.65.307] hidi-hole with iron
  • [-276.69.174] three landbridges

Images

I took this photo at the confluence of three land bridges. Pretty rare to find one of these. You can build a house under it at -276.69.174.

My Review

Even though this was the lowest scoring seed of the day, that doesn't mean it's a bad one. Quite the contrary: it's simply uneventful. I was impressed by the lava fall and the resulting forest fire it started and I enjoyed finding so many resources like coal and iron, but other than that, the caves are well hidden and the board is mostly flat grassland and lots and lots of water. So it's a mixed bag and a serious challenge for anyone who's just starting out with Minecraft.

Items of Interest

  • [-88.64.20] overhang with nearby coal
  • [-133.68.10] medium gravel
  • [-239.66.36] hidden cave
  • [-237.65.-132] exposed stone revealing some coal
  • [-275.71.-183] lava flow and burning trees
  • [-322.67.-145] exposed stone with coal

Images

In the first image, this was a land bridge that had nothing but water underneath of it. This occurs a lot in this level. At right, this lava fall (-275.71.-183) scorches the earth at it's feet. That chicken didn't fair too well, either.

My Review

If you're expecting a grand waterfall pouring off a beautiful overhang in some scenic marvel that quenches your thirst for eye candy, you're gonna be sorely disappointed. This was the worst seed of the day -- not because I didn't find a single waterfall, mind you, but because this seed is openly hostile and inhospitable in every sense of the word. In order to survive, I had to kill and slice open a tauntaun. There is snow everywhere and trees have all but vanished. I was pretty sure the game had simply glitched out. If you want to cry, jack this puppy up on survival mode and kiss your ass goodbye.

Items of Interest

  • [55.72.300] zombie sounds
  • [60.73.89] hidi-hole
  • [84.70.-21] deep zombie cave
  • [35.73.-26] the only green on the board; this is not a waterfall... this mountain is taking a piss on your leg
  • [73.71.-96] small overhang

Images

Yeah, that was my spawn. I didn't have too many expectations after that.

My Review

With the success of "[23]" yesterday, I thought I would try my hand again at a bracketed seed. I was wrong to think that brackets would bring me happiness. This was the worst level of the day; if you played this level on an X-Box at your mother's funeral, you would say to yourself, "Well, at least she's not playing this level!" Sand everywhere and trees so sparse you could sell the wood on E-bay. Your spawn is in the middle of fucking nowhere. You have no shot at a hidi-hole unless you dig straight down looking for dirt that you could carry back to the surface of the sand. If you like dying things green, then this is the level for you.

There is one interesting feature that's worth harping about. There is a lava pit next to a lake at the foot of a hidi-hole cave on this level that allows you to create an obsidian generator if you can make yourself a diamond pickaxe. There was a humorous pig island which was six blocks long and had three pigs vying for control, but that's no reason to play this crappy thing.

Items of Interest

  • [-177.74.-143] a flooded sand cave
  • [-154.65.-258] the sound of trapped zombies in the middle of the day; you may find a zombie spawn if you dig near here
  • [-110.67.-264] a shallow cave full of coal
  • [-53.66.-209] the obsidian generator

Image Coordinates

A four corners photo of the one and only anything other than sand! The photo on the right is of the obsidian generator at -53.66.-209. You can just make out the cave at the top.

My Review

The single best board of the day was bookended by the two worst of the day -- including this one... the worst. This board was so flat I didn't even have to space myself to take a photo of it. It's flat. Flat. Flat. No mountains or hills. There are many, many squid in the deep and complex ocean waters surrounding the sands of this desolate, barren sandbar. Huge swaths of gravel, if you happen to go that way. I would not recommend this for a beginner and experts and above may be able to find subterranean caverns to make it interesting, but I suspect that's going to take some serious patience.

Items of Interest

Nada.

This view won because it was the first one out of my camera. I hold it in no special regard.
