Etymology

I play DOTA 2 and this is the name of one of their upcoming tournaments I think. Actually, I don't know. It flashed by while I was waiting for my match to begin, so really it could have been an ad for tickets on a vacation into outer space.

My Review

This is a really nice archipelago -- three main islands and then a couple of little ones hanging around. I like how each island is different and they more or less surround a huge body of water. I found a really cool stronghold that spanned a ravine; on one of the bridges was just sitting a chest. In the same stronghold, I found a flooded library -- not something you see every day. I was also impressed with a huge erosion in the middle of the desert on the west island. It's so big, you can clearly make it out on the map.

All told, even without villages this is a really cool map for groups who want to float from island to island for a little while. The only bad parts were the two swamps: one in the southeast corner the other in the northwest corner. Check out the last photo below: a random floater with a rose.

My Review

This level is an icy cesspool. As far as the eye can see, the view is as white as the side of an egg. Most of the board has no trees and then all of a sudden, there's a forest so thick you can barely walk through it. There are ravines everywhere. One minute you're walking along looking at your map and the next you're plummeting through darkness to your doom. If there was one bright spot, it's in the southwest corner of the map where a hot spring has birthed a small patch of green. Play this one at your own risk.

My Review

I started off getting spawned next to a village in the southwest quadrant of the map, so that was lovely. After that, I had a look around. This seed has a wide variety of biomes attached to it. There are no less than three separate deserts, three separate icy spots, and two mountain ranges. There are several good ravines and plenty of opportunities for obsidian.

[TOP] A shot of the new sunset as the sun goes down between a double spire in the middle of the map. I'm not a fan of the sunsets -- they look horrible when viewed at the edge of the map -- but this one looks alright I guess.

[ABOVE] This is an overhang and a land bridge -- both medium in size -- in the mountainous region of the map. As you can see, these mountains aren't all that impressive, but I thought this was a good shot.

[ABOVE] - This is a dead drop that lands on top of a stronghold. The stronghold is alright, but getting down to it is an epic challenge. You can find this entrance at 132.64.-323.

Etymology

One of Calvin's many alter-egos, Spaceman Spiff is an intrepid space explorer -- the first man they call when a new planet is discovered and needs investigating. Spaceman Spiff makes many appearances in the comic Calvin and Hobbes.

My Review

The biggest problem with this seed is that just when you think you found an amazing mountain, you realize it's not a mountain at all but just an empty shell around a huge cave complex. This happens over and over again. It's quite annoying. There are a lot of good hidi-holes near deep caves where you can set up shop and then go exploring. Most of the time, this helps, but there are cave complexes so complicated that in order to get "unlost" you're going to have to go crying to the customer service desk and have them page your mother so she can come pick you up. This level is only for the best of the best. You've been forewarned.

This top image is the epic overhang known henceforth as the "Sharkbit Surfboard". It's a monster and hangs off the end of a skinny spire just taunting the laws of physics. Directly underneath of that is a nice little hillside with a single tree. I just through it was nice to find some calmness amongst the insanity of this level.

Moving on to the images at right, this is another craggy, twisted overhang that kind of looks like a raptor claw. It creates a lot of shade, so beware of zombies. In the middle shot, these pumpkins have an excellent view of this thin overhang and the valley below.

Finally, I tried waiting for it to stop snowing, but that didn't work out so I just snapped the shot. This was a really cool table-top overhang situated atop a single thin spire. Could be a great place to set up a base camp.

Two Quick Ones

These two seeds were pretty bland as far as the overall ratings went, but each had something special that I know some of you are always on the look out for.

Seed: gypsysunandrainbows

Jimi's first album was a bust, but in the center of the board are a series of spider-web islands with very, very flat isthmuses. Dead flat, mind you: ready for construction. This would be a prime location for some waterfront real estate.

Seed: C418

This is the name of the band that wrote the music for Minecraft. Sadly, I turned off the music for Minecraft, so this board has no sentimental value. Instead, it does have a deep cave at 64.68.270 that goes all the way down to Y=12, though the last lava pit is a dead drop, so don't get trapped down there. Gold, iron, and redstone were all there. As you head down the cave gets less and less impressive, but worth mentioning.

Etymology

So, I found this seed name on 552 gaming. Basically, the name of this seed is the word "Octagonal" spelled wrong. No word on who spelled it wrong first, but I'm pretty sure 552 needs an editor. "Octagonal!" is one of the random phrases on the Minecraft menu screen and means "eight-sided".

If you play this one, bear in mind the "O" in "Octogona" is capitalized.

My Review

So, I picked up this seed because I was planning on refuting it. The list it is traveling around on is posted on 552 gaming and then got wrapped into a bigger list that someone else ripped off on se7ensins. It talks about cacti and sand and a pretty grassy land bridge by your spawn and I was like, "this thing has got to suck". Well, it's just your average, ordinary Minecraft level -- unless, of course, you happen to find the super terrific mega cave complex. Then, it's something quite spectacular. The only reasons to play this level are to 1) visit the nether, and 2) attempt to conquer the labyrinthine train-wreck cave system I found. Without either of those, the rating on this level would be in the teens.

And I say, "I found", by the way, because not a single review of this seed mentioned an awesome cave. Not one. So suck it. The top-side could be a great seed for beginners, but this cave is suicidal. So I averaged the two and decided this level is for advanced players.

Can't Miss

There are no less than eight entrances to the massive cave complex located in the north by northwest quadrant of the center of the map. My entrance of choice because it was almost a straight drop down to the good stuff was at -167.19.-226. I set up base camp at the top and then built stairs down the dead drop until I reached platform #1 (there are three platforms before the lava).

The caverns are full of waterfalls that help facilitate your descent, but there are also cross-paths and circular passages that cause confusion. I used 64 torches before even making it to platform #3 and as I write this, I have used a total of 200 torches and there are still black side paths and alternate caverns that I haven't even touched yet. I focused only on getting down to lava, finding diamonds, and then digging up obsidian so I could see what the nether looked like.

For the love of James Lipton, people, label your cave!!! Attempting to remember where you are and how to get back out will leave you a raging headache.

The Nether

The nether on this level is quite spectacular, however navigating around is a huge pain. Firstly, I spawned on a shelf in the middle of the sky full of soul sand. So I'm already wondering around at 1 mph jumping up and down to pick up speed (like that works). Secondly, this thing is completely floating in mid air, so getting down to have a look around was an epic feat of engineering.

The nether itself is full of shelves and is wide open and full of interesting things to see. There are plenty of glow stone formations, towering lava falls that pour from ceiling to floor, and I also found a quadruple lava fall on the far side of the nether from where I spawned. But getting to it is going to require you to build bridges... big time bridges.

So, since the cave is all that matters on this level, the cave is what you'll get. This is a view from the first platform looking down at the second platform after I lit the whole thing up. When you first get here, it's just blackness full of drops to serious injury. At right, I did find this nice super-flat valley up top while I was looking around. If you were in the mood to plunk down a town here, this would be the place to do it.

The shot in the nether is a view of the terraces hanging over the lava sea.

My Review

This seed is all about where you get spawned. The west side of this map is a frozen hunk of ice, though it does contain a lot of trees. The east side of the map, however, is a lush island paradise and highly recommended. This is one of the flatter maps I've ever traversed. Had it not been for the swimming, I would have finished this map in record time. And even swimming to the islands wasn't too bad because there are rocks and sandbars along the way, so really in terms of navigation, this seed plays quite nicely.

This land bridge is pouring water onto the frozen sea that runs underneath it. I can't recall seeing anything like that before. If you look very closely at the image, you can make out a small, low-hanging floater in the background.

My Review

What can I say? I'm a beach bum at heart. And this seed tickles my fancy with stretches of deep blue water the color of a Brittany girl's eyes peppered with a dirty archipelago that only an ocean-going explorer could love. It's quite easy to hunt down coal and iron on this level, so you're not going to have to walk too far to get going. However, making your way around the board over great distances is difficult, so if you're not happy with your spawn, you're going to be in some trouble. Not for the noob, but good for everyone else.

My Review

This was a really nice level that I think can be enjoyed by any player, including people who are just starting out. This is a beautiful archipelago. I successfully dove off of two cliffs into water. Great balance and a predominately flat seed round off the reasons why you should check this one out.

I found this almost perfect frosted step pyramid on the northeast island. Something tells me this would make a perfect home for an up-and-coming pharaoh.

My Review

Well, the good and bad of this level is that you're trading trees for lava pits. There are no less than three lava pits on this level. The trees are located in the extreme south and east parts of the map; the rest of the map is barren and mostly made of ice. Patches of snowy wasteland and dried-up desert make this a seed that's best left to experienced adventurers looking for a challenge.

At top, this small cove has eroded away some of the neighboring hillside. As for the image at right, this is a very interesting cave. Firstly, there's a waterfall that will take you all the way to the bottom -- past, as it turns out, a lava fall. Conveniently, you can make it all the way to the bottom and then back up by swimming the waterfall. However, the bottom is just a hole. There's no cave. So you'll need tools and stuff to make this thing useful.

My Review

Sadly, the namesake beautiful island off the south of Australia generated a very lackluster map. However, if you're interested in flatland, this seed might be the one for you. There are islands on the west of the map and several flat sandy beaches that could easily play host to your dream village.

My Review

This Minecraft-twisted play on Edgar Alan Poe's oft-quoted magpie would make for a good survival map. My first time through, I didn't find any caves and that had me worried, but I went back a second time and found one really deep cave with some lava features. So, I have confirmed that there is at least one cave on the map. Hazzah! Beyond that, you're looking at flat and barren snow-covered mounds as far as the eye can see.

In my first play-through of this level, I forgot to take photos because I was so uninspired. However, when I went back the second time, I took a different path and discovered some cool lava features -- including this lava fall (one of two) inside a large deep cave. I plan on going back to see what else is hiding in this cave. At right, this lava pit, sitting half obscured by its neighboring hill, illuminates the night.

My Review

The primary attraction of this level is the water: there is a metric ton of the stuff just everywhere. You could spend hours diving below the surface looking for secret spawns and caves. Aside from that, you're going to find a very balanced level that's good for noobs or the casual player. This archipelago features many flat islands and lots of clay.

My Review

My spawn was a desert island and the seed was so flat I began slaughtering sheep by the dozen so their bodies would provide some kind of relief. This is absolutely one of the flattest levels I have ever seen. The big attractions are the humungous gravel pile and an unusual, very flat island. If you're looking for a good space to build a megalopolis, then this may be the place for you. If not, bail.

My Review

This seed world is a barren desert location. You're going to find that the trees are confined to the far reaches of the map and appear as strips of forest amidst the desert sands. My spawn was awful; nothing at all to help me out. There's good, deep, open water on this level. Not for beginners, but a nice challenge.

My Review

This seed is a series of extremes. First I found these crazy high mountains that were very difficult to climb to the top of. Then, I found a deep basin with two waterfalls that I had to climb down to in order to get coordinates. Then back on top to get over the mountains only to go down again to a very large flat beach. Given how few trees there are and what crazy elevation changes you're going to experience, I recommend this level only to expert players.

My Review

I knew after thirty seconds that this write-up was going to need a full map. The northwest corner of this map is completely empty except for deep water. In the southwest is the primary island surrounded by a smattering of tiny islands. While normally spawning in a tree is a sign of good wood, if it happens to you, make sure you hack that bastard down and take it with you. Trees on this level are few and far between. This dirty archipelago is an outstanding level and I recommend it to anyone who has some experience under their belt and would like a formidable challenge.

My Review

As you can see from the map, this level basically looks like an island got yanked off the mainland. I spawned in a tree -- so you know finding wood isn't going to be a problem. However, not finding wood when you're trying to walk in a straight line is an issue when you find the dense forests on the west side of the map. The west end also has many caves. There are, however, several flat areas on the east island that would be perfect construction places for towns. So this seed has quite a range of biomes.

My Review

This is a seed I would recommend to groups of friends who are looking to play together and start a village or a massive castle. There are large areas of flat land that are just waiting for construction. Beyond that, wood is incredibly sparse, though the few trees that exist are conveniently placed near hidi-holes. The northeast corner of the map is all ice, so I would head south and west if I were you. The big attraction that kept this seed out of the dog house is the underwater spider spawn that I found. It takes twenty to thirty minutes to a) kill the spiders and b) get the water out of the pit (bring 64x2 sand), but it's worth it.

My Review

Continuing on my volcano themed seeds, be careful of the spelling on this one. It's "magma" plus "nimous" -- not the word "magnanimous", a word that means generous or forgiving. I assure you, this level is neither. Harsh conditions begin with a lack of wood and intensify if you try to go anywhere and have to swim there. I saw very little that was visually appealing. This one is a pass for beginners and a play for people looking for a really tough challenge or a flat plain to build a village.
