Etymology

The sun is often portrayed in movies and such as being directly overhead. However, in actuality that is quite rare and happens only near our equator. In fact, because the Earth has a weird orbit around the sun, the lines that indicate the furthest distance north and south from the equator that you could experience a moment when the sun was directly overhead change. This year, the Tropic of Cancer (the north one) will be at 23° 26′ 15.143″ north of the Equator.

Ironically, this one is full of snow and ice. There are also plenty of trees and lots of pumpkins. This seed has all the makings of a snow-golem invasion!

Occasionally, when a message comes on top of the main menu screen, I'll plug it in just to see if it gives me anything. Nine times out of ten, I get nothing. However, in this case, I struck gold. Well, rock... actually. Anyway, thanks Minecraft for your thoughtful suggestion.

My Review

If I only had three words to describe this level, they would be: very tall mountains. And I would put emphasis on the word "very" to make sure you knew I was serious. From the top of any of several mountain peaks cresting well above Y=100, you can see many caves and large overhangs throughout the central section of the map. This map does have it's fair share of icy areas, so don't think this seed is going to make it easy on you. Quite the contrary, you should expect a pleasant welcome for advanced users and a kick in the shins if you're a noob.

My Review

This is not a seed; this is a depressing frozen ice box that the Devil uses to store his frozen foods. Most of the caves are flooded and there are very few trees. You know that a seed is suicidal when, while backing up to take a photograph of a massive shaded land bridge full of creepers you are descended upon by creepers -- holding the Devil's fish sticks -- living in the massive shaded cave behind you, who want to know if you have a permit to film in this location. If you insist on seeing this carnage, the southeast corner has all the formations. Avoid.

The scar that rips through this rock formation is full of shadows and creepers. It's actually a series of land bridges that act as one umbrella above the terrain. You can find it at -249.78.349. At right, this is a less imposing but equally scenic overhang.

My Review

Well, the good and bad of this level is that you're trading trees for lava pits. There are no less than three lava pits on this level. The trees are located in the extreme south and east parts of the map; the rest of the map is barren and mostly made of ice. Patches of snowy wasteland and dried-up desert make this a seed that's best left to experienced adventurers looking for a challenge.

At top, this small cove has eroded away some of the neighboring hillside. As for the image at right, this is a very interesting cave. Firstly, there's a waterfall that will take you all the way to the bottom -- past, as it turns out, a lava fall. Conveniently, you can make it all the way to the bottom and then back up by swimming the waterfall. However, the bottom is just a hole. There's no cave. So you'll need tools and stuff to make this thing useful.

My Review

In the grand sport that is "Suicidal Minecraft", this seed has a real chance of making it into the hall of fame. The sixth worst seed I have ever found, this map is a flat, icy, barren disaster. If your mother told me she was an active member of the Nazi party, I would still not recommend this seed to her. You have to swim... everywhere. There is one island, due east, that is full of trees. If you quarantined yourself to this island you may have a chance to eek out a miserable existence. Leave the island and you'll find nothing but tears.

My Review

Continuing with my ground-breaking series of bracketed number seeds, "[27]" turned out to be something of a letdown until I found the obsidian generator featured in the above photo. Then, I felt vindicated. Assume that "[28]" will be coming shortly. Most of this level is an ice world, though it has more trees, caves, and visible resources than the other two ice worlds I posted earlier so it's a little easier and not so barren. Still, this world is probably best left to the experts.

My Review

When I dreamed up this seed name, I thought maybe I'd find a level with lots of day-creepers in it. I did not think I'd find Ireland in January. This is an icy, frozen world with only the occasional patch of green. In fact, in looking at the map, I would say that this world is half frozen icy barren nothing and half grassy flowered barren nothing. An awful spawn with nothing to see, this seed is only suitable for people with serious mental instabilities.

My Review

This is a seed I would recommend to groups of friends who are looking to play together and start a village or a massive castle. There are large areas of flat land that are just waiting for construction. Beyond that, wood is incredibly sparse, though the few trees that exist are conveniently placed near hidi-holes. The northeast corner of the map is all ice, so I would head south and west if I were you. The big attraction that kept this seed out of the dog house is the underwater spider spawn that I found. It takes twenty to thirty minutes to a) kill the spiders and b) get the water out of the pit (bring 64x2 sand), but it's worth it.

My Review

Dead last for a reason: this flat, baron ice-world offers very little in the way of shelter or trees, so is definitely not for beginners. However, this isn't a suicidal expert level either because there are actually a significant amount of caves around, making this a level that some people may enjoy because of the underground exploration. Something to consider. My spawn was pretty sparse, though there were pumpkins there. I did find a deep hole and a cave complex to the east.

My Review

This is quite possibly the hardest level you could play. Why? Because if you look closely at the map, there are about three trees in the northeast corner, two trees in the southwest corner, and NOTHING in between but snow and death. I can't imagine the horror that would be this level on anything other than creative. This was second worst of the day only because the vast frozen gulf is easy to walk across and the resources (coal, iron) are easily found. This is the kind of level where even torches are a waste of good wood. My advice: make one torch and just keep moving it around with you. The only person who could be happy in a place like this would have to be related to Jor-El.

My Review

What are the odds that a seed with the word "ice" in the name would be a frozen world devoid of fun and charm? Ironically, this was not at the bottom of the list today because it scored quite highly in the caves department. I didn't find many caves, mind you, but the ones I did find exceeded my expectations. This is clearly a level with many deep holes that you might find while digging just in random places. This is not a level for beginners.

My Review

Cold, barren, and icy. This level has few trees but some conveniently place frozen water for getting around and some good caves to have a look at. This seed is basically two main islands, one to the northeast and the other to the southwest. Even though the majority of the world is flat, I rated this level high in hills because the few hills it has are epic, interesting, and hard to traverse. Incidentally, in the photo above, you can see a clay deposit in addition to the interesting formation.

My Review

I would never crow about a level whose only features were gravel and snow -- though both are readily available in this seed. In few other maps do you have to climb this far up just to climb so far down. The caves on this map are quite treacherous. One wrong step can cut your health in half -- or worse. Your whole existence is going to be about producing torches.

My Review

Well, that photo up there says it all. Cold. Very cold. Icy and vast. No wood, no deep water, and no hills. In fact, all the water is frozen -- which is actually convenient because all the land is spread out all over hell so huge frozen ice is a good way to get around. It's a hell of a thing to see -- a vast frozen ocean -- even if you don't stay for the ride. And by ride, I mean caves -- which are basically holes in the ground that literally are only one or two cubes wide through which you can plummet to your death. I spawned in the north and then moved southwest. Nothing improved. Very cold.

My Review

This seed gets a beginner rating because even though there are few trees, most of them are concentrated around the spawn area, so it works out well for noobs. In addition, there are very few caves from whence enemies may launch a sneak attack. Beyond that, if you like caves, swim out to the mini islands. If you like icy gravel, then stay where you are.

My Review

My homage to the greatest game in history (that's right, I said it!!!) is actually a very nice Minecraft seed -- if you're SUICIDAL! It's really nice that this world has such deep waters because that's where you should spend most of your time... almost drowning. The spawn point (in the extreme north of the map) is horrific -- one of the worst I've seen. There's just nothing. Head due east for wood. Much of the water is covered in ice, so you don't have to swim as often as you would think. Lots of gravel and clay. Now, you'd think I would tell you to avoid this level, but it's actually quite beautiful with many, many interesting features. So, I'd give it a shot -- if you're SUICIDAL! My God, you were actually considering checking this one out, weren't you. You sick bastard!

My Review

This seed is about as hospitable as the moon. I spawned in a flooded cave full of iron. That was the last nice thing to happen to me. I was penned in by sheep on a hillside. I was hit with an arrow while passing by the mouth of a cave that I didn't even know was there. The only interesting resource I found was a shitload of gravel. This is a Spartan world with little to look forward to, virtually no wood, and openly hostile caves. Not for the faint of heart.

My Review

The seed "queenbee" was a pleasant surprise. At first when I looked at it, I thought it was going to be an icy letdown. However, the cave systems on this map are amazing -- and there are a lot of them. I'm a big fan of floaters -- blocks that aren't connected to anything, they're just hanging in mid-air. As such, this level is interesting because it has clusters of floaters in several locations.

There is an amazing cave at 158.60.398. There is a second, deep cave at -41.70.-59. There are many deep gorges, floaters, and a lava fall that's pouring into and defrosting a frozen lake. It's really cool.

My Review

Sand mixed with snow. Even though it didn't score very high, I do like this seed. This map would be especially good for someone who had never played before for the simple fact that immediately within sight of where you spawn, there is practically an entire hidi-hole dug out and ready to go. It only needs some mud to protect you from the baddies. In addition, there are plenty of trees -- you will have no problem managing your wood budget.
