Etymology

On maps of the world, Greenwich is a section of downtown London. Because of their naval superiority, the English were the ones who set up the lines of longitude that we use today on our world maps. As a result, they determined that zero-degrees on a map would run through their capital city. Today, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is also derived from this system.

Notes

Some good small hills and mounds and a few mushroom islands are about. A great level for beginners looking to try their hand at island hopping.

Etymology

I was playing Call of Duty yesterday and I went 34-1, with the final kill coming in the last ten seconds of gameplay from a lightning strike. That was what we in the industry refer to as a shellacking. Past tense: they were shellacked.

Notes

"shellacked" is, without question, one of the most stunning and amazing seeds I've found in the TU9 era. Above ground, there are some amazing gorges, cliffs, and extreme hills. Below, there are ravines piled on top of each other and mixed with caves in such a way that you can't discern which are is ravine and which is cavern. The nether has one of the biggest nether fortresses I've ever seen. All the way around, this one is a must play.

Can't Miss

"The Blue Cave" is a stunning and confusing place. Basically, it's the convergence of four ravines and two separate cave systems, all of which have dug out the bottom so it's just a vast expanse full of waterfalls and lava floors. It's beautiful, but you can easily get lost in this thing, so brings signs or something to help you. I picked the entrance that is the least confusing and used it as the coordinates below, but there are dozens of ways to get into this thing -- some of which break through directly onto the surface.

Etymology

The Borgias were a famous family of popes who took the Vatican Church to a whole new level of simultaneous corruption and proselytism. Their hedonism, though admirable in most ways, is rumored to have dabbled in the incestuous. And their quest to consolidate their power came at the cost of the entire Italian peninsula. They are literally the definition of Machiavellian.

My Review

The hovering, twisted land bridges and overhangs of this Gothic and beautiful seed hold a debauchery worthy of their namesake. Throughout the level, random creeper after random creeper sits in silence waiting to make his move. Skeletons appear from inside forests to train their bows upon you. It's quite a thing. During the moments of peace, you're going to find hundreds of pumpkins all around the level... staring. Just staring. It's like you owe them money. Suddenly, you find yourself hiding in a cave, weeping at the thought of facing their collective grimace. Always watching.

Eh... anyway... there are some really nice caves to explore and of course plenty of wood. All told, true beginners should shy away but everyone else should at least have a look at this thing because it's truly beautiful. And infested with pumpkins. Grinning... always watching...

I have in my possession at least another four photographs that are equally compelling. This level has a lot to look at. Starting at the top, a striking overhang that looks a lot like the bow of a ship. Beneath that, you'll find a photo of a less conspicuous overhang and a small hole in the foreground that leads to a dead drop cave.

The two smaller images at right include a photo from within the "overhang valley" of a massive overhang that floats above the trees. Luckily, none of these overhangs are close enough to the ground to house zombies. Finally, this massive beast is only two blocks away from being a land bridge. These are just some of the many things to see and play with in this level. Good luck!

Occasionally, when a message comes on top of the main menu screen, I'll plug it in just to see if it gives me anything. Nine times out of ten, I get nothing. However, in this case, I struck gold. Well, rock... actually. Anyway, thanks Minecraft for your thoughtful suggestion.

When typing in this seed name, don't forget the spaces and the exclamation point.

My Review

If I only had three words to describe this level, they would be: very tall mountains. And I would put emphasis on the word "very" to make sure you knew I was serious. From the top of any of several mountain peaks cresting well above Y=100, you can see many caves and large overhangs throughout the central section of the map. This map does have it's fair share of icy areas, so don't think this seed is going to make it easy on you. Quite the contrary, you should expect a pleasant welcome for advanced users and a kick in the shins if you're a noob.

From the top of this mountain peak, you can get a clear view of the large tabletop overhang below and a small cave system that scratches the surface of a neighboring mountain. At right, even though the level has a lot of snow, there are plenty of green spots to break up the monotony.

My Review

Inspired by my on-line find, templeofdoom, I decided to try another Indiana Jones classic. This was a really well-balanced level, though I would have liked to have seen more water. You're going to have to dig to find your resources; there were very few just sitting around for the taking. There are lots of nooks and crannies in this seed, so you're always going to be exploring something. There is a clearly defined pockets of trees and no trees. I'd suggest beginners start building somewhere where there's no trees so you can see the creepers coming.

Etymology

The Pythagorean Theorem is one of the most useful equations in all of geometry. This is one in a series of mathematically-inspired seed names.

My Review

This is a beautiful, scenic map chock full of numerous rock formations that are absolutely gorgeous. However, above and beyond all the others are the Pythagorean Quintuplets -- a series of four individual mountains that are so close together you could connect them with bridges. The first three (Harriet, Judy, and Celeste) are steep craggy rocks that are hard to climb but full of resources like iron. The fourth -- Bertha -- however is a massive imposing Everest-like mountain full of creepers and death.

My Review

Inland lakes and hidden caves are the flavor of choice for this particular seed. This is definitely a good seed for beginners, as there is a great balance and plenty of trees. My spawn point was nice and even had a little coal in it. While I found several hidden caves, the one at -24.65.-133 clearly had the most potential, though you're going to need a pickaxe and a shovel to make any headway.

My Review

For this seed, I simply chose some random numbers. The odds are the same, so why not try it out. For the most part, this is a nice little seed. There are epic amounts of grassland, which makes finding wood an issue. Most of the caves I found are deep, pitfall-style caves so be careful where you step. Still, not bad for a noob looking for a challenge.

Etymology

Canine parvovirus is a disease that effects dogs. It is highly contagious and can be spread by direct or indirect contact with dog feces. Untreated, it's almost always fatal; treated puppies can make a full recovery. If you own a dog, you should learn more about parvo.

My Review

Aside from the massive desert that consumes the entire north end of the map, this level is quite exciting. There are two really awesome lava falls and -- hold on to your butts -- I found a pink sheep. That's right... the mighty pink sheep. Can't swear he'll be there for you, but he was around. Moving on, the mountains on the east side of this map are insane. This full map took longer than any other I've ever done simply because navigating these mountains is a huge hassle. The desert flatland is a good place to find clear, open land for a city and you're going to find many caves to explore. All told, a definite consideration for players looking for a challenge.

This is another one of those times where I just couldn't limit it to two photos. At the top, you're going to see an amazing land bridge that actually spans catty-corner, which is unusual. If you're willing to do a little bit of digging first, you can turn this into a fun little cliff diving experience.

At right (above), you're going to see a table-top overhang that lives above the cloud line. Any lower, and the shadow would probably hide some baddies, but as it were, it's a nice place to hide in the clouds. Below that, this is a massive lava fall (at -108.68.-232) that clearly burned down all the trees in the immediate area.

My Review

So, this is one of the more popular seeds you find out on the Internet. It's usually like number ten on the top ten list and it's easy to see why. There are many awesome formations spattered around the board. Overhangs galore. I will warn you that at one point I was wondering along minding my own business and I feel through a hole in a grassland plain into a lava pit and was almost burned alive had it not been for a single square of water just within emergency reach. So, I'm just saying... watch your step.

My Review

What a fantastically evil place. You'll notice that the Angelique Desert consumes the majority of the right side of the map; I would avoid this area... it's a bit dry. Mount Barnabas, on the other hand, is located in the southwest quadrant and is a lovely place to visit -- if you like day-walking skeletons. Quentin Bay in the north has some nice deep water if you'd like to take your own life and Carolyn Island, brooding all by itself in the northeast corner, is a great spot to set up your summer home -- if the wolves don't get you, that is.

My Review

Since the first one worked out so well (12345678910), let's go the other way! Well what'dya know? It's even better. In fact, it's the second best seed I took a look at today. High, jutting mountains that pop up completely out of the blue is the call of the day for this level. Zombies sounds just walkin' around and shielded creepers make this a challenging seed; avoid this one if you're still just learning Minecraft.

My Review

Highest pumpkin patch I've ever seen. I should be able to write that and that should be the end of this review because you should instinctively want to see that. However, if you need more, so be it. This level features the highest and thickest lava fall I've found yet AND (within spitting distance) a great stone basin.

My Review

This is one of the best levels I've seen so far. It's ranked as expert for one simple reason -- this level features massive overhangs that are so large and so profound that their shadows allow all forms of baddies to live above ground during the daytime. Then once night falls, the creepers are already out so they populate the board significantly faster than in other levels. This, is one challenging board that is both gorgeous and treacherous.

My Review

Well, here's to all you snarky bastards that think that name games are stupid. Thanks to your "stupid" suggestions, we found this awesomely sinister level. Many hills and mountains with great features and sheer cliffs that fall so far they can kill you instantly. With practically no trees and resources that are hidden better than the gold at Fort Knox, this is a suicidal challenge for anyone who bothers to give it a go.

Can't Miss

So, right near the spawn, I found something truly awesome. It was a lava pit that was probably built next to running water. The result is a huge black spot of obsidian. While you won't be able to do anything about it for a while, it's cool to know that three years from now when you finally get a diamond pickaxe that this is your reward.
