Etymology

In the movie (and book) Gone With the Wind, Scarlet O'Hara is a fiery brunette with a short temper. She gets that from her father Gerald -- an Irish laddie who was forced to flee his homeland after he murdered a man.

Notes

Four villages to chose from should keep you fairly busy. The abandoned mineshaft I found runs through a large ravine, so it's more open than your usual AMS. The crater lake was nice.

My Review

There's a lot to see in the mountain region. And this seed is almost all mountain region. You have lakes that have carved out deep cliffs and valleys full of waterfalls. All around, including the nether and the end, this level is both challenging and unique. I highly recommend it.

Can't Miss

There is a major valley in this area. The walls are incredibly steep and there are two twin really-tall waterfalls. If you can run through this valley from end to end in the middle of the night with all the zombies out, that would be quite a challenge.

The Nether and The End

The Nether is well balanced between open lava and complex tunnels. The End, however, is one of the worst I've seen. You spawn in a 5x5x5 hole inside the land that you have to climb out of. Of course, you have no idea which way you are pointed. It's quite a thing.

My Review

What can I tell you? I started the next 100 seeds with the next in my ongoing obsession with bracketed numbers. I feel strongly that one of these is going to pay out. Anyway... LAKES. Lots and lots of lakes. The other thing -- and this is more of a cautionary note -- is random creepers. They're not even in the shade or in caves -- just out in the open wondering around. It was weird and maybe a glitch. Who knows. Anyway, good trees and deep water. Worth checking out.

My Review

What are the odds that a seed with the word "ice" in the name would be a frozen world devoid of fun and charm? Ironically, this was not at the bottom of the list today because it scored quite highly in the caves department. I didn't find many caves, mind you, but the ones I did find exceeded my expectations. This is clearly a level with many deep holes that you might find while digging just in random places. This is not a level for beginners.

My Review

Well, here's to all you snarky bastards that think that name games are stupid. Thanks to your "stupid" suggestions, we found this awesomely sinister level. Many hills and mountains with great features and sheer cliffs that fall so far they can kill you instantly. With practically no trees and resources that are hidden better than the gold at Fort Knox, this is a suicidal challenge for anyone who bothers to give it a go.

Can't Miss

So, right near the spawn, I found something truly awesome. It was a lava pit that was probably built next to running water. The result is a huge black spot of obsidian. While you won't be able to do anything about it for a while, it's cool to know that three years from now when you finally get a diamond pickaxe that this is your reward.

My Review

Third best of the day. This seed has two things going for it. One is the easily accessible lava pits and the other is the massive crater at the top of the big mountain. This crater was so huge I couldn't shoot a photo of it. The top of the crater is usually obscured by clouds, so you can actually fall into it if you come in over the top and are unaware that it's there. Luckily, there's a shortcut; a collapsed entryway that you can sort of see through and dig through to enter in the middle. Amazingly, this seed is incredibly well balanced, illustrated by the premium award standing without earning any of the other awards. Oh, and there's lots of squid here, too.

It's all about the massive pit: 30.92.271. It's quite a hike from the spawn, so make sure you bring lots of supplies.

My Review

This place is a snowy wasteland. As far as trees and other essentials are concerned, it's slim pickings. At the spawn, they maroon you on a sandbar. There are some quirks to this level, like hidden pitfall caves with only a single cube hole at the top and trees that grow out of water. Both were interesting to see, but the level as a whole is probably a pass unless you're into climbing either up or down.

Just when I thought this level had nothing for me, I damn near killed myself stumbling into a massive hidden cave at 247.65.106 -- nowhere near the spawn, but still worth the trip if you want to see the hole I fell through. There's also a lake inside of a gorge at 75.69.260.

My Review

The seed "queenbee" was a pleasant surprise. At first when I looked at it, I thought it was going to be an icy letdown. However, the cave systems on this map are amazing -- and there are a lot of them. I'm a big fan of floaters -- blocks that aren't connected to anything, they're just hanging in mid-air. As such, this level is interesting because it has clusters of floaters in several locations.

There is an amazing cave at 158.60.398. There is a second, deep cave at -41.70.-59. There are many deep gorges, floaters, and a lava fall that's pouring into and defrosting a frozen lake. It's really cool.

My Review

The single best board of the day was bookended by the two worst of the day -- including this one... the worst. This board was so flat I didn't even have to space myself to take a photo of it. It's flat. Flat. Flat. No mountains or hills. There are many, many squid in the deep and complex ocean waters surrounding the sands of this desolate, barren sandbar. Huge swaths of gravel, if you happen to go that way. I would not recommend this for a beginner and experts and above may be able to find subterranean caverns to make it interesting, but I suspect that's going to take some serious patience.

My Review

So, it's a shame because the very first seed I randomly picked turned out to be one of the worst of the day. There is a large amount of trees and some lakes that look like they may have some secrets buried within, so it did score highly in those categories, but there isn't much of anything else. Overall, I found the map to be quite boring.

Items of Interest

I did find an unusually large number of sugar plants and wolves. There was also a vast lake with a deep bed as well as a single hill with a sheer cliff and cave. This is slightly far from the spawn at 200.72.-148.
